Project
Gare Maritime, located on the Tour & Taxis site in Brussels, has been transformed from a historic freight station into a covered urban district combining work, retail, events, and public life. Designed by Neutelings Riedijk Architects, the project reimagines the vast steel halls as a “city under one roof,” offering generous indoor streets, gardens, and squares.
Within the early 20th-century structure, a series of new timber pavilions create a network of pedestrian boulevards inspired by traditional city patterns. A large central space remains open for public events, while green promenades and inner gardens introduce daylight, vegetation, and seasonal comfort at the heart of the building.
Constructed largely in cross-laminated timber, the project combines architectural heritage with contemporary sustainability. Fully energy-neutral and fossil-free, Gare Maritime integrates extensive solar power, geothermal energy, and water reuse systems. Completed in 2020, it stands as a key milestone in the sustainable redevelopment of Tour & Taxis and the wider Brussels canal district.
